Teenage Girls as Authors for Digital Storytelling - A Practical Experience Report

ICIDS'10 Conference Paper (International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling)

This paper describes a workshop held at Augsburg University during Girls’ Day, where nine teenage girls (ages 14–16) were introduced to the authoring tool SceneMaker and tasked with creating short interactive stories using virtual hamster characters.

After a brief theoretical introduction, the participants worked in small groups to design and implement their own dialogues and narrative flows. Despite their lack of prior experience, the girls produced entertaining two-minute stories on topics such as family, parties, and vacations. The study found that the tool was intuitive, the activity engaging, and that the participants enjoyed the creative process, with some showing strong motivation to continue beyond the allotted time.
